Gerd is Full Professor and Department Head of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. He obtained board certification in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at Munich University Hospital Grosshadern, Germany, where he trained from 1991-1999. Gerd’s research interests are centered on the molecular and functional characterization of drug and bile acid transporters, drug-induced liver and kidney injury and the role of nuclear receptors in the regulation of transporters and as drug targets for the treatment of liver and metabolic disease. Gerd is work package leader of the work package “Drug-induced liver injury” in the IMI TransBioLine consortium (evaluation of novel biomarkers in drug-induced liver injury) and is a core member of the Pro-Euro DILI Network, Europe. He is also a member of the IQ DILI Consortium in the working groups on Biomarkers and Immunotherapy, and of the Steering Committee of the Translational Safety Program in BioCelerate / TransCelerate. He acts as Global Head of Mechanistic Safety and Chair of the Hepatic Safety Team at Novartis, Basel.
